What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot: Expert Tips for Stunning Photos
When it comes to maternity photos, your outfit is everything. Okay, maybe not everything—you still need a great photographer (hi, that’s me!)—but what you wear can completely set the tone for your images. Your outfit does more than just cover your bump; it shapes the overall vibe of your session, even more than the location. So, let’s dive into the secrets of styling your maternity shoot to perfection!
Find Your Vibe: What Style Speaks to You?
Before picking out an outfit, think about how you want your photos to feel. Are you dreaming of an ethereal, high-fashion look? A tulle gown with dramatic sleeves can make you look like you just stepped out of a fairytale. Want something more casual? A lace dress, a fitted tea-length piece, or even jeans with a cute crop top can bring a laid-back, effortless feel. Looking to turn up the heat? A form-fitting, see-through gown or a dress with a high slit can give your photos a sultry, goddess-like energy. Your style, your rules!

The Magic of the Client Closet
One of the best perks of working with me? My client closet! It’s a dreamy collection of gowns designed specifically for maternity sessions, each with its own unique personality. Think of it as stepping into a world where fantasy meets reality. When you book a session, you get access to this treasure trove of stunning dresses. Worried about fit? Don’t be—I’ve got clips and tricks to make sure everything looks tailor-made just for you. All you have to do is pick your favorite and show up ready to shine!

Want to Wear Your Own Outfit? Here’s What to Consider
If you prefer to wear something of your own (or if your photographer doesn’t offer a client closet—bummer!), here’s what you should keep in mind:
1. Color Matters
- Choose a shade that complements your skin tone and won’t wash you out.
- Patterns? They’re fine in moderation, but bold prints can be distracting unless they match the vibe of the location.
2. Fit is Everything
- Jeans? Make sure they’re comfy or leave them unbuttoned for a relaxed, effortless look.
- Shirts? Either cover the bump completely or rock a crop top to show it off.
- Dresses? Length is crucial. If it’s a maxi dress, make sure it actually touches the floor (baby bumps can cause dresses to ride up, and suddenly, that ‘maxi’ dress is more of a ‘midi’). If you want short, go for something flouncy and fun.

Think About Posing & Movement
Certain outfits limit movement and posing options. Love that sleek, fitted gown? Be prepared for some wrinkling if you bend your knee. Planning to sit down? Jeans might not be your best friend in that moment. Want to throw your arms up in the air or wrap them around your partner? An off-the-shoulder dress could make that tricky. Think about what poses you love and choose an outfit that works with them, not against them!

Can't do this pose with off the shoulder dress.

This wouldn't have the same effect with other fabrics.

This would be hard in jeans.

Creating this shape is much more difficult with a skin tight dress.
Accessories: The Cherry on Top
I am a big fan of barefoot maternity photos. Why? Because pregnancy feet swell, and shoes can sometimes emphasize that (plus, why torture yourself in heels?). That said, if you love shoes, go for it—just make sure they fit! Strappy sandals and too-tight heels can be uncomfortable, and most outdoor sessions involve walking on grass, sand, or uneven terrain.
Other accessories to consider:
- Hats – A wide-brim hat or fedora can add serious style, but save hat photos for the end to avoid hat hair!
- Jewelry – Wear pieces that feel like ‘you.’ If you always wear rings or have a sentimental bracelet, show them off.
- Crowns & Gloves – Yes, I have these, and yes, they can take your look over the top in the best way possible!

What About Your Partner?
If your significant other is joining, they should complement your outfit, not steal the show. Here are some easy guidelines for the guys:
- Suit & Tie: Perfect for ultra-glam sessions where mom is wearing a dramatic gown.
- Sunday Best: Dress pants + button-down = a classic, polished look.
- Casual Cool: Well-fitted jeans or khakis + a polo or plain tee keeps things effortless.
- ‘More Than Naked’: A shirtless dad in jeans for intimate, timeless studio portraits.
🚫 What NOT to Wear:
- Baseball caps and sunglasses (if mom is in a floor-length gown, this just doesn’t work!).
- Flip-flops or shorts (unless we’re doing a very specific beach look).

Coordinating Family Outfits
If kids or other family members are joining, their outfits should complement yours. Think cohesive color palettes and textures rather than matchy-matchy outfits. The goal? A beautifully styled session where mom and her bump are still the stars!

Final thoughts
Your maternity session is a celebration of you and this incredible journey. Whether you choose something dramatic, casual, sexy, or ethereal, the key is feeling confident and comfortable. When in doubt, ask your photographer (hi again!) for advice—I’m always here to help you look and feel your absolute best. Let’s create something magical together!
